Instructions for Authors

The journal Biotechnologia Acta publishes articles and short communications containing information on the results of scientific research and reviews in various fields of modern biotechnology. Reviews, experimental articles, short reports, articles on the history of biotechnology, conference abstracts, and new publications in biotechnology and related sciences are published in English with identical abstracts in Ukrainian. Manuscripts may be submitted in Ukrainian (with subsequent translation into English) or in English. All materials are subject to mandatory peer review.
Editorial work with manuscripts and publication of articles are carried out free of charge.

Bioethical Standard

The journal adheres to the rules recommended by the European Convention for the Protection of Vertebrate Animals Used for Experimental and Other Scientific Purposes (Strasbourg, 1986) and the International Committee of Medical Journal Editors (ICMJE).

All experiments involving laboratory animals, human-derived materials, or participation of donors and patients must be conducted in accordance with bioethical standards. When describing animal studies, authors must indicate which institutional or national guidelines were followed during the procedures.

If doubts arise regarding compliance with the Declaration of Helsinki (1964) or similar standards, authors must explain their approach and confirm that an independent ethics committee or institutional review board approved the relevant aspects of the study.

Before the “References” section, the following statements must be included if approved by the Ethics Committee:
1. All studies involving humans are conducted in accordance with the ethical standards of the institutional and/or national research committee and with the principles of the 1964 Declaration of Helsinki and its later amendments or comparable ethical standards.
2. Statement on animal rights: Authors must ensure the proper welfare of animals used in research. The publication must indicate compliance with international, national, and/or institutional requirements for the care and use of animals, and confirm approval of the study by an ethics committee (if applicable). If the article does not involve studies with humans or animals, the following statement should be added: “This article does not contain any studies involving humans or animals performed by any of the authors.”

Ethical Responsibility of Authors

Biotechnologia Acta strives to maintain a high reputation for scientific research. The journal follows the recommendations of the Committee on Publication Ethics (COPE) https://publicationethics.org/guidance/Guidelines for responding to possible violations of ethical standards. Authors must avoid any distortion of results that could undermine trust in the journal, call into question the professionalism of researchers, or discredit scientific activity in general.
Compliance with high standards is ensured by the rules of good scientific practice, including:
• A manuscript cannot be submitted simultaneously to multiple journals.
• A manuscript must not have been previously published (in whole or in part), except in cases where the new work significantly expands previous results. In such cases, reused material must be clearly indicated to avoid self-plagiarism.
• A single study should not be artificially divided into several publications to increase the number of articles.
• Data, including illustrations, must not be fabricated or deliberately distorted.
• Texts, data, and theories of other authors must not be presented as one’s own (“plagiarism”). Proper references must be provided for all sources, including verbatim quotations, summaries, or paraphrases. Verbatim quotations must be enclosed in quotation marks. For copyrighted materials, permission for reproduction must be obtained.
• Submission of a manuscript is possible only with the consent of all co-authors and with the approval of the relevant authorized bodies of the institution where the research was conducted.

Peer Review Procedure

All articles undergo single-blind peer review by three independent experts appointed by the editorial board and not in conflict of interest with the authors. Submission of a manuscript implies authors’ consent to the review procedure.
At the preliminary stage, the editorial office checks the manuscript for compliance with the journal’s profile, ethical policy, and formatting requirements. Improperly prepared materials are rejected or returned to authors for revision. After acceptance for consideration, the manuscript is assigned a registration number, which is communicated to the authors.
Manuscripts deemed suitable for publication are sent for single-blind peer review. Reviewers’ comments and recommendations are forwarded to the corresponding author. If necessary, authors must provide step-by-step responses to comments and submit a revised version of the manuscript. The process may be repeated until reviewers and editors consider the work satisfactory.

Editorial Decision

Based on the reviewers’ conclusions, the editorial board decides whether to accept, reject, or send the manuscript for additional review. The final decision regarding publication is made by the Editor-in-Chief.

Authorship

The journal’s authorship policy takes into account different types of research and ensures a clear definition of each author’s contribution.
Author Contributions. All research articles must include a section specifying the contributions of the authors. Please briefly describe the contributions, using initials to identify specific individuals.
Corresponding Author and Primary Contact. At least one corresponding author must be indicated. The primary contact person is responsible for communication with the editorial office before and after publication, for handling requests regarding reagents and resources, and for resolving potential disputes.

Basic Requirements for Articles

The manuscript must demonstrate novelty, relevance, and proper justification of the facts presented; experimental data must be reproducible according to the described methods; formatting must comply with the journal’s requirements.
Citing unpublished data or personal communications is not permitted to support key statements. Publication is possible only after all cited sources have been officially published.

Submission of Articles

Submission of a manuscript confirms that the work has not been previously published, is not under consideration in another journal, and that its publication has been approved by all co-authors (if any) as well as by the relevant institutional authorities where the research was conducted. The publisher bears no legal responsibility for possible claims for compensation.
Authors who include figures, tables, or text fragments already published elsewhere must obtain permission from copyright holders for both print and online formats and provide proof of such permission upon submission. All materials not accompanied by appropriate documentation are considered to have been created by the authors.
